Military Cut, Flat Top, Crew Cut And Buzz Cut Haircut Differences

The differences between military, flat top, crew cut and buzz cut haircut styles

Hi everyone, hope you are enjoying the cooler October weather here in Orlando! At Conway Village Barber Shop we do a LOT of military style haircuts. However there are several types of military cuts you can get.

So I thought I would list the most common types here so you know the differences. One of our long time barbers Steve has done thousands of military style haircuts! Here are some in no particular order.

Military haircut

A military style haircut can have several variations. Some people call it a soldier cut, Army cut or a Marine cut. The overall style of it is a very short, shaved haircut. It conforms to the standard military haircut regulations and requirements.

Anyone who is a Veteran or military member has had a military haircut. The main reasons for a short style haircut in the military is so everyone can fit properly into their headgear, keeps lice and insects away, easy to clean and low maintenance.

Flat top haircut

A flat top haircut is a variation of the military cut, or at least many think so. The main characteristic of the flat top cut is that the hair at the top of the head is very flat and horizontal all the way across the top. No curving or fading, just a flat top.

The sides are often short, with maybe a fade to contrast with the longer flat top hair. The hair is styled and cut to stand straight up, forming the flat level plane at top. Barbers use a flat-top comb or clippers to get that flat top look. It has a very sharp, clean and symmetrical look.

Another version of the flat top is the horseshoe flat top haircut. With this the sides and back of the head are completely shaved bald, leaving only a short horseshoe shaped flat top of hair on top.

The open end of the horseshoe shape points to the back of the head. The hair at top is often cut very flat and level, hence the name horseshoe flat top.

Crew cut haircut

The crew cut haircut can have several different variations, just like the military haircut. Overall it is short, tapered on the sides and back with longer hair at the top. Length of the hair on the top is normally only between 1/2 inch to 2 inches.

The sides and back are short, but can vary a bit in length. Normally they are shaved with clippers with a number 2 to 4 size. You can have a taper or fade, with a low fade or high fade.

The top can be very flat or curved. Again overall it is a short style haircut. You can ask to texture the top for a more styled look. It is a very easy to manage haircut style. Just wake up in the morning and go!

Buzz cut haircut

Finally we have the buzz cut haircut style. With this the hair everywhere is cut very short with a razor or clippers. The sides can sometimes have a fade. Most of the time the hair everywhere is cut the same length.

Also some add a cool razor cut line or pattern in the sides or back of the head. The hairline is very sharp and crisp. This is about the most maintenance free haircut style for men you can get! However you do have to get it cut often to keep that short, clean look.
