Hello and welcome to the month of August 2026! 🙂 It seems to be getting just a teeny, tiny bit cooler out. Or maybe that is just my wishful thinking, ha! I hope this month goes well for all of you; I’m sure most of us could use some good luck these days.
Getting a good haircut is not just luck, it’s about choosing a great barbershop, such as Conway Village Barber Shop! 😀 But there also are a few things you can do and NOT do with your hair before a haircut that increase the odds of getting that perfect cut.
So today I’m going to list some of the things you should do and not do before going to a barbershop that will help your barber or hair stylist out and make sure you get the haircut style you want. So in no particular order here are some hair tips for you.
Wash your hair

It’s always a good idea to wash your hair within 12 to 24 hours before your haircut appointment. Washing it will get rid of any buildup of gels, sprays and hair products. Those can make cutting your hair difficult and make it sit unnaturally on your head.
That in turn may cause your barber or stylist to cut it incorrectly and look different after a day or two. However you can ask him or her to shampoo your hair before they cut it. Either way clean hair is always best and makes for a pleasant haircut for both of you!
Avoid gels, sprays and hair products

On a related note, avoid applying hair products, gels, thick sprays or heavy oils on your hair. The barbershop tools may clog up, slip or cut your hair unevenly. Plus they will not let your hair sit naturally so it will be harder for them to know how to cut your hair right.
Don’t wear a hat

If you love wearing a hat, please leave it at home on haircut day! Wearing a hat presses your hair down and into an unnatural shape. That in turn makes it harder for your barber to see how your hair normally looks on you. Nobody wants a square looking haircut!
Don’t wear tight or high cut shirts

Your barber needs easy, free access to all of your hair, including the lower back of your neck. Wearing a hoodie, turtleneck or high collar shirt will get in the way of the cape, washing it and cutting it. Wear a t-shirt, low cut shirt and/or a lose shirt.
Don’t tie hair tight or in braids

Tying, wrapping or braiding your hair before getting a haircut makes it kink or changes how the hair naturally flows and falls. This makes it hard to cut it correctly. Leave your hair naturally all day before your haircut appointment. Your stylist will thank you!
Bring pictures of styles you want

If you are going to a new barber or stylist, having a different barber at the shop do your haircut or want to try a new style, bring pictures of what you want with you. These days it’s easy to have pictures on your phone of what you are looking for.
They will help your barber understand what you are looking for. Make sure you don’t mix those pictures up with shots of your poodle! 😀 Don’t be afraid to ask questions about what to expect with a new style or if it is the right look for your head shape.
Following the above list of what to do and not to do before getting a haircut will make your visit more pleasant, make your barber happy and insure you leave with the haircut style you wanted. Stop by Conway Village Barber Shop soon and let us give you a great haircut! 🙂
